Business Websites Just Keep Getting Worse

There was a time in the world of online marketing when the website was king and ruled supreme. Prior to social media," businesses had just one way to market themselves digitally - that was to develop a high quality and well presentable website designed from ground up to bring in visitor traffic and generate leads. Today, however, the whole situation with digital marketing has become a bit muddy with many business owners reluctant to invest financially into a high quality website and opting instead to spend their time on futile efforts to setup company pages on all possible social media platforms, or even worse, attempting to DIY their company website with no web development experience.

Digital Marketing for B2B is a Difficult Affair

The digital marketing sector is a rapidly growing and evolving beast. The nature of technology is such that virtually all new digital marketing developments, be they genuine opportunities or pointless fads, are quickly taken up. One of the reasons for this is that a large portion of digital marketing systems often come with a highly deceptive price tag - "FREE". Want to Lease A Commercial Property? Think Twice!

There is no argument that real estate is one of the most important (if not the most important) systems in Australian society. This may be just my personal opinion, but I feel that almost every Australian has a secret desire to be a property investor – after all, it is where most of the money seems to be made. Indeed the standard for success in Australia is to get a good job, save up (or get your parents to go guarantor if you are lucky), make an appointment with your friendly mortgage broker and get into the market. I've even seen an article that called property investors “entrepreneurs”. This is the standard path that Australians are expected to follow.

Accepting Online Payments: Chargeback Fraud, Cryptocurrencies and Other Issues

Credit cards have been the preferred way of making online payments for some time. This payment method took a while to become accepted and faced a lot of resistance from consumers  – just recently, giving up credit card details to an online store was considered "too dangerous". With time, payment gateways like Paypal and buyer protection measures provided by financial insititutions eroded this fear. Virtually every online store today proudly advertises that they accept VISA and Mastercard. In some cases, it is the only payment method offered.

Payment Comes First

Long payment periods are a serious problem for small business. The 30, 60 and even 120-day payment terms are often imposed by larger companies upon smaller suppliers and cause quite a bit of issue with cash flow. There is an effective way to fight this, especially if your company collects small payments. This is done by changing your company policy in regards to payment collection and implementing an online booking or purchasing system that requires instant online payment via VISA/Mastercard. There simply isn't any reason to provide extended payment terms for small orders with today's availability of credit.

Realities of Selling Online, Digital Marketing and Start-Ups

One can observe a recurring pattern when chatting to aspirational yet-to-be business owners that set their mind on venturing into the world of entrepreneurship. It appears that they are often drawn to developing an online business or otherwise focus heavily on an online presence. The reason for this is simple - entering the digital appears to only incur a small financial burden at first glance. New entrepreneurs generally have limited access to finance (that often turns out to be a good thing) and the digital space often seems like the correct way to go. However, developing a successful online business and digital marketing is a fairly tough game.

Web Security – Your Responsibilities as a Service Provider

Everybody is aware that as a consumer, you must be careful with supplying your identity details on an online form, pay by your credit card online via secured connections only and selecting random cryptic passwords for all your logins (tongue in cheek). Having said that, online service providers do indeed have a duty of care to follow good security practices (and some rigid industry standards in a few cases) to ensure that the details of their clients are not compromised. After all, it is the service providers that set the standard in secure online communications that our customers end up with. This article will explain some of steps providers can and need to take to ensure good security practices.

Websites that Sell and Generate Income... on Their Own

Have you heard stories about entrepreneurs that have built an online business that actually draws customers in and sells genuine products and services on its own? I am referring to websites that actually work as both lead generation tools and transaction facilities at the same time – i.e. they sell for your business just like a sales person. This isn’t just the domain of startups – plenty of legitimate businesses successfully implement and run this model. Having said this, successful online businesses are much more rare than you think.

Digital Credit Card & Identity Theft

Just 10 years ago it was impossible to convince anybody to supply their credit card details to any online merchant. Fear of credit card details being stolen, thousands of dollars being withdrawn with no recourse for the thief and general irrational paranoia held e-commerce back for a long time. Today, the situation has completed a complete 180 degree turn and it’s common to see credit card details and sensitive personal information passed around via email and other insecure means.

WP: Pros and Cons

WP (see wordpress.org for more information) is a brand that most known or at least heard of, irrespective of their business background. This free, easy to use and open source Content Management System (CMS) became the most widely deployed platform for simple business websites and blogs. In this article, I would like to explain some of the Pros and Cons of WP as a solution from the perspective of a web developer – i.e. when this system is the perfect solution, as well as when it should definitely not be used. And, I would also like to mention the licensing system that applies to WP and why caution should be used where it is used for custom and proprietary projects.
