It is little known that our country delivers a most spectacular and precious gift from the earth. It is a diamond like no other. From the depths of the Argyle diamond mine in the Kimberly Region of Western Australia is found rich and luscious chocolate coloured diamonds - precious finds from a mine with a diminishing life expectancy. The earth in our part of the world has released a limited source of diamonds that range from a soft transparent milk chocolate colour to a deep, intense, rich cocoa colour.
As much as it is fun to imagine chocolate diamonds flowing deliciously and spectacularly from a mine - it is not quite that easy. Finding them, mining them, processing them, cutting these specialised gemstones and then taking them to market is a task for the hardy.
Creating Australian Chocolate Diamonds (ACD) is a true labour of love. The Argyle Diamond Mine produces some of the hardest diamond rough in the world. Once found and after huge expense, the first 20 Australian Chocolate Diamonds took three months to cut with underwhelming results. Too much variation in degree of heat or pressure in the cutting process shattered the gemstones. The top facet had to be ground down rather than cleaved resulting in no usable leftover rough. A half carat diamond would take three or more days to cut. The highest standards in diamond cutting techniques perfected for cutting white diamonds were employed. This produced perfection of Hearts and Arrows and triple Excellent grading by GIA standards, but still - the results fell flat. These diamonds did not display the irresistible beauty that top quality cutting typically produces - something was just not quite right.
After years of expense and trial and error a change of thinking changed the future of these spectacular gemstones. The ACD cutting team stopped cutting these diamonds as though they were white diamonds. This was a focus on getting the most sparkle out of the gemstone - a focus that also intends to mask colour. Cutting began with the key purpose of revealing the natural, colourful beauty of each piece. This, combined with world class cutting techniques, unveiled the unique and natural beauty of these unusual glittering diamonds in startlingly beautiful, chocolatey colour ranges. The fire within each gemstone was finally, although painstakingly, captured.
Today, the Australian Chocolate Diamond cutting factory has 70 skilled diamond cutters who carefully assess each piece of diamond rough, taking up to 150 hours to cut a single gemstone. It simply cannot be cut with standardized computer specifications. Rather, many hours and days are spent by a skilled cutter to gently persuade the true individual beauty of each diamond to sparkle to life. It is only then that the diamond can become a part of this distinctive collection.
Australian Chocolate Diamonds are guaranteed to be conflict free and comply with both the United Nations Resolution and The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme. Each chocolate diamond comes with its own 'My Diamond Story' which illustrates each step the diamond has taken from mine to market, providing full transparency in the stone being invested in. There are no 'blood diamonds' produced here in Australia.
The Argyle mine has partnered with businesses and organizations for many years throughout the east Kimberly region. Their activities and projects support local communities and help build better futures for many in remote areas. Mining is a highly regulated industry in Australia. Rio Tinto has a history of minimizing environmental disturbances and is globally committed to sustainability. Knowing this, we can be proud of and support Australian products such as ACD.
